Fidelity Bank Empowers Young Women Through Debate on International Day of the Girl Child

Fidelity Bank Plc, a leading financial institution, recently organized a debate competition for female secondary school students to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.

The event was held at the Fidelity SME Hub in Gbagada, Lagos, on October 16, 2025, and brought together six secondary schools to debate on the topic: “In today’s world, is digital literacy more essential for girls than traditional life skills?”

The debate served as a platform for young female voices to express their ideas, challenge societal norms, and showcase their intellectual strength.

Osita Ede, Divisional Head of Product Development at Fidelity Bank Plc, represented by Harriba Harry-Pepple, Head of Women Banking, emphasized the importance of equipping girls with relevant skills and support to thrive as adults.

“When a girl is educated and supported with opportunities for self-expression, she becomes a catalyst for positive change in her community and beyond,” Ede said.

The competition saw talented students showcasing their argumentative skills. Chizaram Unachukwu of Cedec International School emerged as the winner, receiving N500,000.

Nwatu Chidera of Brookstones and Best Brains International School took the first runner-up position, winning N300,000. Chizaram Ekueme of Awesome College secured the second runner-up spot, receiving N150,000.

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, highlights the unique challenges girls face and promotes their empowerment and human rights.

Fidelity Bank Plc reaffirmed its commitment to creating opportunities that empower girls and women through its Women Banking Initiative, HerFidelity.

The bank aims to nurture and celebrate the limitless potential within every girl, enabling them to dream boldly, learn confidently, and lead fearlessly.
