Dangote Cement Targets Continental Self-Sufficiency in Production

Dangote Cement Plc has reiterated its commitment to making Africa self-sufficient in cement production as part of efforts to strengthen the continent’s industrial base and reduce dependence on imported construction materials.

The pledge was reaffirmed by the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, during a strategic briefing on the company’s expansion drive across Africa.

Pathak said the company is intensifying investments in key markets to bridge supply gaps and support Africa’s growing infrastructure needs.

“Our vision is clear — to ensure Africa produces enough cement to meet its own needs,” Pathak said. “Through continuous expansion, operational excellence and a strong distribution network, we are positioning Dangote Cement to power growth across the continent. We are not just building a business; we are building Africa’s future.”

He disclosed that Dangote Cement, Africa’s leading cement producer, is targeting a total production capacity of 90 million metric tonnes per annum across the continent by 2030.

According to him, the company has already eliminated Nigeria’s reliance on imported cement, transforming the country into a net exporter to several neighbouring nations.

Dangote Cement currently operates integrated plants, grinding facilities and distribution hubs in multiple African countries.

Ongoing projects include plant upgrades, capacity expansion programmes and the deployment of energy-efficient technologies aimed at lowering production costs and reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

Reinforcing the long-term vision, the company’s founder and President, Aliko Dangote, described cement self-sufficiency as both an economic necessity and a continental responsibility.

“Africa has no reason to depend on cement imports,” Dangote said. “We have the raw materials, the talent and the determination. Our goal at Dangote Cement is to ensure that every African nation has access to affordable, high-quality cement produced within the continent. This is how we build prosperity, create jobs and achieve sustainable development.”

Dangote added that the company’s investments underscore its commitment to boosting Africa’s industrialisation and global competitiveness.

With major infrastructure projects underway across the continent, including highways, bridges and housing developments — demand for cement continues to rise.

Industry analysts say Dangote Cement’s renewed push towards continental self-sufficiency is expected to improve supply stability, moderate prices and enhance reliability in the construction sector.

Dangote Cement Plc is Africa’s largest cement producer, focused on delivering high-quality and affordable cement products to support infrastructure development and economic growth across the continent.
