Nigeria’s Tax Reforms Get Boost from African Tax Administration Forum

The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) has expressed its support for Nigeria’s tax reforms, which have culminated in the new tax laws.

The Executive Secretary of ATAF, Mary Baine, made this known during a visit to the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, in Abuja.

Baine stated that ATAF stands by Nigeria’s efforts to reform its fiscal landscape and pledged to provide technical support to help realize the gains of the reforms.

She cited the example of how ATAF had helped Zambia build capacity in raising revenue from mining, and promised to offer similar support to Nigeria.

Adedeji, while welcoming the ATAF delegation, emphasized the need for Africa to look inward for homegrown solutions to its challenges.

He stressed that salvation cannot come from the Western world and that Africa must be at the table in global discussions to determine its own fate.

The FIRS chairman charged Africans to evolve their own fiscal policies, citing Nigeria’s new tax laws as an example. He noted that the old tax laws were colonial relics and that Nigeria had taken steps to modernize its tax system.

The ATAF Executive Secretary expressed her organization’s willingness to leverage Nigeria’s continental and global influence to mobilize member-countries to strengthen the organization.

She also commended the FIRS chairman’s strategic vision for the Service, which focuses on people, technology, and data.

The endorsement from ATAF is a significant boost to Nigeria’s tax reforms, which aim to promote economic growth and development.

The new tax laws are expected to increase revenue generation and improve the business environment in Nigeria.

With ATAF’s support, Nigeria is poised to take its tax administration to the next level and become a model for other African countries.
