Dangote Refinery Denies Mass Sacking Allegations, Cites Safety Concerns

The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has rubbished claims of mass sacking of its staff by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). According to the refinery, the allegations are “unfounded and misleading.”

The refinery explained that a recent reorganisation within its workforce was designed to strengthen operations and address repeated acts of sabotage that posed safety risks and disrupted production.

“The foregoing decision was taken in the best interest of the Refinery as a result of intermittent cases of sabotage in the various units of the Refinery with dire consequences on human life and related safety concerns,” the management stated.

Despite the reorganisation, the refinery affirmed that over 3,000 Nigerians continue to work actively at the facility.

“Only a minimal number of staff were affected, as we continue to recruit Nigerian talent through our various graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire recruitment process,” the company said.

The refinery reassured employees and stakeholders of its commitment to internationally accepted labour principles, including workers’ freedom to decide on union membership without interference.

The management emphasised that the exercise was an audit process aimed at safeguarding the long-term stability of the refinery, a strategic national asset.

The refinery pledged to continue working closely with regulators, employees, and stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of safety, transparency, and accountability.

This commitment underscores the company’s dedication to protecting the refinery and ensuring its long-term stability for the benefit of Nigerians and its partners across Africa.
