A fresh crisis has hit the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) as stakeholders have called for the immediate resignation of the union’s President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale.
The demand for their exit comes amid ongoing industrial disputes between Dangote Refinery, NUPENG, and other industry associations.
The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of NUPENG has launched a scathing attack on the union’s leadership, citing lackluster attitude, intimidation, victimization, and harassment of PTD members.
In a statement signed by Comrade Preye Odede-Graham on behalf of PTD elders and stakeholders, the union leaders were accused of using PTD members as “attack dogs” against the federal government and other industry players.
The PTD stakeholders are calling for the re-engineering of NUPENG, citing the need for fresh air and stability in the union.
They have begged law enforcement agencies, anti-graft agents, and industry regulators to support them in showing Afolabi and Williams the exit doors from the union.
The PTD stakeholders also accused Afolabi and Williams of carrying out activities that were contemptuous of the court, including collecting illegal levies and dues at various depots, including Dangote Refinery.
They warned that if the duo continues in office, their joint presence could drag the union into total extinction, local and international disgrace.
Meanwhile, affiliate members of NUPENG have begun passing a vote of no confidence on the President and General Secretary, citing their embarrassing failure of the union.
The PTD has also commended Dangote Refinery for standing against all odds to defeat process pressure and market disruption.
Dangote Refinery’s 650,000 barrels per day capacity, alongside 4,000 CNG trucks and 6,000 truck cargoes, has been hailed as a significant achievement.
The refinery has been able to move products to consumers at no cost, with a value-added capacity of over 40,000 jobs.
