The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently hosted the launch of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Africa-BroadBand (BB) Maps initiative in Abuja.
The project, funded by the European Union (EU), aims to establish harmonized national broadband mapping systems in 11 Sub-Saharan countries, including Nigeria.
The Africa-BB-Maps initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide and promote digital transformation in Africa.
By creating a comprehensive map of broadband infrastructure, policymakers and service providers will be able to better plan and expand broadband access, fostering economic growth and digital inclusion.
The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the NCC, ITU, and EU. Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, NCC, Dana Jon Kamason, Project Manager, Africa-BB-Maps, ITU, Zissmos Vergas, Deputy Ambassador, EU Delegation to Nigeria, Inga Stefanowicz, Head, Green and Digital Economy, EU Delegation to Nigeria, and Elind Sulmina, Project Officer, Africa-BB-Maps, ITU, were in attendance.
The ITU Africa-BB-Maps initiative is a significant step towards promoting digital transformation in Africa.
By providing accurate and up-to-date information on broadband infrastructure, the project will enable the development of targeted strategies to improve broadband access and quality.
The launch of the ITU Africa-BB-Maps initiative in Abuja marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital transformation.
With the support of the EU and ITU, Nigeria is poised to take a major step towards improving broadband access and quality, driving economic growth and development.
