Zenith Bank Plc has announced the introduction of Google Pay for its customers, enabling faster and more secure payments at participating contactless terminals, as well as online and in-app checkout platforms.
The service allows eligible Zenith Bank cardholders to add their supported cards to Google Wallet and make payments using compatible mobile devices without repeatedly entering their card details.
The initiative reflects the bank’s continued investment in digital banking solutions aimed at improving customer convenience, strengthening payment security and meeting the evolving needs of consumers.
According to the bank, Google Pay uses payment tokenisation technology, which replaces a customer’s actual card number with a digital token to help protect sensitive payment information during transactions.
The technology reduces the exposure of actual card details when customers make payments, providing an additional layer of security for digital transactions.
With the service, customers can pay by tapping compatible smartphones at participating contactless payment terminals or use Google Pay at supported online stores and within mobile applications.
The bank noted that availability would depend on card eligibility, device compatibility, merchant acceptance and the payment services supported by individual platforms.
Zenith Bank’s latest digital payment offering builds on its history of technology-driven banking initiatives designed to simplify financial transactions and improve customer experience.
In 2007, the bank opened what it described as Nigeria’s first ATM gallery, a facility designed to provide banking services without human tellers and enable customers to access cash during weekends and public holidays.
The initiative offered an alternative to conventional banking arrangements often associated with lengthy queues, reinforcing the bank’s focus on convenience and accessibility.
The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr Adaora Umeoji, OON, described the bank’s approach as digitally forward, highlighting its commitment to embracing technology to enhance financial services.
She also pointed to the forthcoming Zenith Bank Tech Fair 2026, scheduled for November 5, as another platform for advancing discussions on technology and innovation.
The sixth edition of the event, themed “AI: Embrace or Extinct,” is expected to bring together technology experts, innovators and other stakeholders to explore emerging technologies and their implications for businesses and society.
To activate the service, eligible Zenith Bank customers can open the Google Wallet application on a compatible device, select the option to add a payment card and complete the required verification process.
Once activated, the supported card can be used for payments at participating contactless terminals and eligible online and in-app checkout platforms.
Zenith Bank said the introduction of Google Pay aligns with its broader strategy of investing in technology, operational efficiency and customer-focused innovation to deliver convenient and secure banking services.
The bank added that it would continue to explore digital solutions to support the changing financial needs of individuals, businesses and communities
