The Federal Government has commended the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, for his key role in Nigeria’s successful election into Category C of the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium.

The commendation was conveyed in a recent letter written by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who acknowledged Dr. Mobereola’s strategic leadership and instrumental contributions to the country’s victory at the IMO Council elections held in London.

According to the Minister, Dr. Mobereola’s strategic engagement with IMO Member States and effective coordination of Nigeria’s campaign were central to the nation’s resounding success at the polls, underscoring his dedication to advancing Nigeria’s maritime interests.

“Your strategic engagement with IMO Member States and effective campaign management were pivotal to Nigeria’s resounding success at the election, showcasing your steadfast dedication and unrelenting commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime interests,” Oyetola stated.

The Minister further noted that Dr. Mobereola played a critical role in projecting Nigeria’s maritime potential and ongoing reforms to the global maritime community, thereby strengthening the country’s international standing.

He added that as a key member of the Inter-Ministerial Bid Committee, the NIMASA Director General helped reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to the objectives of the IMO and enhance international maritime cooperation.

Oyetola expressed the Federal Government’s appreciation for Dr. Mobereola’s outstanding service and confidence in his continued contributions toward advancing Nigeria’s maritime development agenda.

In his response, Dr. Mobereola expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister for the commendation, as well as for the leadership and guidance provided throughout the IMO Council election process.

He attributed Nigeria’s success to the dedication of NIMASA staff and the support of key stakeholders, reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

“This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff and the strong support of stakeholders, and it further challenges us to remain focused and committed in delivering on NIMASA’s mandate,” Dr. Mobereola said.

He also called for renewed commitment across the Agency to justify Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council by strengthening efforts in maritime safety and security, marine environmental protection, and capacity development.

Nigeria’s election into Category C of the IMO Council is regarded as a strategic gain for the country and aligns with NIMASA’s statutory role as Nigeria’s maritime administration.
