Nigeria Secures Seat on IMO Council After 14-Year Absence

Nigeria has achieved a significant diplomatic victory by securing a seat on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council in Category C for the 2026-2027 biennium.

The election took place on November 28, 2025, during the IMO General Assembly in London.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, led the campaign and attributed the success to over a year of intensive diplomatic outreach, shuttle diplomacy, targeted engagements, and sustained advocacy across countries and maritime blocs.

Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council after a 14-year absence marks a major milestone in the country’s maritime history.

The victory reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to international shipping governance and maritime development, and the country is expected to play a more significant role in shaping global maritime policies.

The election is a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence in the maritime sector and its ability to engage with the international community.

The country’s seat on the IMO Council will enable it to contribute to key decisions shaping the future of global shipping and maritime development.
