The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has congratulated Nigeria on its successful election into the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council under Category C for the 2026-2027 biennium.
This achievement comes after 14 years of unsuccessful attempts, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s maritime history.
AMJON hailed the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their roles in securing the seat.
The association described the victory as a historic achievement that reaffirms Nigeria’s relevance in global maritime governance.
The association attributed the success to the minister’s focused leadership, strategic diplomatic engagement, and clear projection of Nigeria’s maritime reform agenda.
AMJON also commended NIMASA for providing strong technical and institutional support that strengthened Nigeria’s bid.
According to AMJON, Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council is a recognition of the country’s improved maritime security profile and growing adherence to international maritime standards.
The association urged the Ministry and NIMASA to leverage the Council membership to deepen maritime reforms, strengthen regional cooperation, and attract increased investment into the sector.
AMJON reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The association believes that Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council will enable the country to contribute meaningfully to global shipping and maritime policy discussions, while advancing the interests of Africa and developing maritime nations.
