The Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) has elected a new executive council to lead the association for the next three years, following its elections held on Thursday at the NACCIMA House, Lagos.
In a keenly contested poll, Comrade Taiwo Hassan of New Telegraph emerged as Chairman after securing 25 votes to defeat Rhoda Ogunseye of CrystalNews.com, who polled eight votes.
The results were announced by the three-member electoral committee chaired by Haruna Jimoh of MITV, who confirmed that Hassan met all electoral requirements and was duly returned as Chairman of the association.
Other members of the newly elected executive council include Stanley Ihedigbo of Mirror Newspaper as Vice Chairman; Olufemi Orioye of OGBC as Secretary General; Funmi Adeoye of FRCN as Assistant Secretary; Merit Ibe of The Sun Newspaper as Treasurer; and Canice Opara of DispatchNewsOnline as Financial Secretary.
Jimoh described the election as free and fair, commending members for their orderly conduct throughout the process. He urged the new leadership to remain committed to their campaign promises and work towards enhancing the profile and relevance of the association.
In his acceptance speech, Hassan expressed appreciation to members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to run an inclusive administration anchored on transparency, accountability, and justice.
He said the new executive would prioritise members’ welfare through proactive policies, regular capacity-building programmes, and strengthened engagement with key stakeholders.
Hassan also reaffirmed CICAN’s commitment to contributing to national economic discourse in line with Nigeria’s aspiration to build a $1 trillion economy.
Other members of the electoral committee were Ayanfeoluwa Providence, who served as Secretary, and David Oladimeji of Reporters Diary Newspaper.
