NIMASA, Partners Commemorate Day of the Dockworker with Call for Improved Safety Measures

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has hosted the 2025 Day of the Dockworker in Lagos.

The event, themed ‘Safe Port, Safe Ship’, brought together stakeholders to highlight the importance of safe working conditions and enhanced welfare of Nigerian dockworkers.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, commended dockworkers for their contributions to Nigeria’s maritime development.

He noted that dockworkers are vital to creating a maritime industry where safety is assured and productivity increases.

The Minister highlighted government initiatives to improve safety standards, including provision of modern protective equipment for dockworkers and riverine transport operators.

He also mentioned efforts to enhance safety training, improve emergency response capabilities, and promote professional development schemes.

The President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu, praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy for his commitment to dockworkers’ welfare.

He also appreciated the Minister of Labour and Employment for his steadfast commitment to protecting Nigerian workers.

The Director of Productivity, Measurement and Labour Standards in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Emmanuel Igbinosun, urged stakeholders to remain committed to the ideals of safe work environment and appropriate remuneration for dockworkers in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards.

The event saw stakeholders from the maritime industry come together to recognise the vital role of dockworkers in sustaining Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The Day of the Dockworker is organised by NIMASA in collaboration with NPA and NSC with support from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy
