Effective Port State Control Key to Safer Shipping, Says NIMASA DG

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has emphasised the importance of effective Port State Control (PSC) in ensuring global safety and maintaining environmental standards in shipping.

He stated this at a 5-day Regional Train the Trainer Workshop on Port State Control (PSC) for Member States of the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Dr. Mobereola, represented by the Executive Director, Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, noted that the quality of professionals implementing PSC determines its overall success.

He commended the IMO, the Abuja MoU Secretariat, and technical partners for their support towards capacity-building and regional cooperation.

The representative of the IMO, Captain Ahmed Sewelam, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Member States through its technical cooperation programme to strengthen effective and harmonised Port State Control regimes globally.

He noted that effective regional cooperation and harmonised PSC practices are essential to eliminating substandard shipping and promoting consistency across the region.

The Secretary-General of the Abuja MoU, Captain Sunday Umoren, highlighted the importance of capacity building and regional cooperation in ensuring maritime safety and compliance.

He stressed that effective Flag State control directly influences the quality of Port State Control operations and emphasised the need for strong national systems.

The workshop, which brought together delegates from 22 countries across West and Central Africa, aimed to deepen capacity, harmonise standards, and strengthen maritime safety oversight across the region.
