Committee for Defence of Human Rights Accuses Oriental Energy of Gross Misconduct

By Barnabas Esiet.

The Akwa Ibom State Branch of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has issued a stern warning to Oriental Energy Resources Limited (OERL) over its alleged failure to meet its commitments to the Mbo community.

According to the CDHR, despite having an agreement with the people of Mbo, OERL has failed to fulfill its obligations, leaving the community frustrated.

The committee has published the agreement documents between OERL and the Mbo community, revealing the company’s shortcomings and unmet obligations.

The CDHR has urged OERL to take immediate action to fulfill its obligations and provide the necessary benefits to the Mbo community.

The committee has also called on the Federal Government, Akwa Ibom State Government, and the National Assembly to review OERL’s activities.

“We fear potential unrest in Mbo community if OERL fails to fulfill its obligations,” said Comrade Ndifreke Afangide, State Chairman of CDHR, Akwa Ibom State Branch.

“We will continue to fight tirelessly for the rights of the people of Mbo and ensure that justice is served.”

This development comes despite OERL’s efforts to engage with its host communities, including the creation of a Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

The company has also been involved in various corporate social responsibility initiatives in the region.

The CDHR’s allegations against OERL are a serious concern, and stakeholders are eager to intervene to prevent potential unrest in the Mbo community.
