The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Director General, Emomotimi Agama, has underscored the significance of embracing a green economy in Nigeria.
Speaking at the Oriental News 2024 Summit in Lagos recently, Agama highlighted the numerous benefits of a green economy, including economic diversification, job creation, and improved public health.
He emphasized the need for developing green infrastructure in urban areas to enhance air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions stressing that both the government and private sector must adopt a green economy approach to address Nigeria’s diverse problems.
Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones face unique climate challenges, necessitating tailored policies and strategies to develop a sustainable green economy.
Agama called for robust policies and strategies, highlighting Nigeria’s diverse landscapes and natural resources, which position the country to lead in the green economy.
He expressed concern over Nigeria’s historical neglect of an economy that could sustain its natural resources, leading to widespread poverty.
The SEC boss underscored the significance of addressing foundational issues through a green economy, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and preserving biodiversity.
He noted the significant impact of environmental degradation on public health and local industries, such as the fishing sector.
Agama highlighted the opportunities in the country that can be productively harnessed, such as turning waste materials into valuable products, and transitioning from an oil and gas-dependent economy to a green economy.
He suggested establishing solar energy estates in the northern regions to boost power generation and create employment opportunities.
The SEC DG envisioned a future where Nigeria leads in green technology, promoting public health and reducing reliance on polluting energy sources.
He mentioned the need for environmental sustainability, pointing out significant challenges such as water pollution, soil degradation, and deforestation while advocating for tree planting initiatives and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Agama further called for public-private partnerships to achieve a green economy, stressing that the government cannot do it alone
