Telecommunications industry stakeholders have identified potential obstacles to the Federal Government’s plan to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fibre optic cables across Nigeria.
The project, aimed at complementing existing connectivity for universal internet access across Nigeria , faces challenges like Right of Way charges, multiple taxation, and levies controlled by state governments.
The Stakeholders, during the Sixth Edition of the Policy Implementation Assisted Forum (PIAFO) in Lagos recently, emphasized the need for state governments to take ownership of the project and resolve these issues to ensure successful implementation.
They also stressed the importance of private sector involvement and effective policy implementation to achieve the project’s goals.
The World Bank is expected to provide $3 billion in funding, and stakeholders urged the government to engage the private sector in execution and policy development.
Speakers at the event include; Executive Director of Broadbased Communications, Chidi Ibisi, Group Chief Operating Officer of WTES Projects Limited, Chidi Ajuzie, Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, Chief Executive Officer of OADC, Dr. Ayotunde Coker, and Convener of the forum, Omobayo Azeez.
The forum highlighted the need for collaboration and harmonization among stakeholders to drive digital economy growth and overcome infrastructure challenges.
