NIMASA Praises Nigerian Women for Contributions to Maritime Sector Development

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has lauded the significant contributions of Nigerian women to the advancement of the maritime sector.

Mobereola expressed his appreciation during the recent celebration of the International Day for Women in Maritime in Lagos.

The event, themed “Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” saw the participation of various associations such as the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA), Women in Maritime (WIMA), Women in Logistics and Transport (WILAT), and Women in Maritime West and Central Africa (WIMOWCA).

The International Day for Women in Maritime, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), aims to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions and resilience of women in the maritime industry.

Representing Dr. Mobereola at the event, Jibril Abba, the Agency’s Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, acknowledged the remarkable achievements of women in maritime.

He highlighted the pivotal role women play in shaping the industry, driving innovation, and inspiring future generations of women to pursue careers in maritime.

Abba emphasized the importance of women’s contributions to the development of the Nigerian maritime industry, stating, “Your dedication, passion, and commitment to a more inclusive maritime community are truly appreciated.

Together, we can harness the nation’s blue economy to build a sustainable and prosperous maritime industry that benefits us all.”

Olamide Odusanya, the Director of Financial Services at NIMASA, also recognized the efforts of the IMO in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for women in maritime, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 on Gender Equality.

During the event, Gloria Anyasodo presented a paper on “Emerging Trends: Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety and Opportunities for Women,” emphasizing the importance of competence, education, expertise, and mutual support in enhancing safety in the maritime industry.

Various women leaders in the maritime sector, including Dr. Odunayo Ani, Rollens MacFoy, Princess Margaret Inam, Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore, and Olaitan Williams, delivered messages of goodwill, highlighting the crucial role of women in shaping the future of the maritime industry.
