Kano Free Zone: Customs Area Controller, Dauda Chana, Reaffirms Commitment to Implementing Government Policies

The Customs Area Controller of Kano/Jigawa Command, Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana, has restated the service’s dedication to facilitating legitimate trade while upholding government policies, particularly those affecting special economic zones like the Kano Free Trade Zone.

Chana emphasized that recent media reports alleging government revenue loss due to operations in the Kano Free Trade Zone are baseless and far from reality.

He assured that the command has strategically positioned officers to ensure proper management of finished products within the zone and excise factories under its supervision.

Addressing accusations of customs officers colluding with businessmen to divert finished products to the Export Processing Zone and evade customs duties, Chana dismissed these claims as unfounded and aimed at undermining the government’s objectives for the Zone.

Contrary to allegations of revenue loss, Chana revealed that the Kano/Jigawa Command recorded a significant increase in revenue generation between January-April 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

He urged reporters to seek clarification from his office or the Public Relations Officer to obtain accurate information on the command’s activities.

Chana explained that the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) regulates the zone’s operations, and NCS officers only intervene if there is an intention to export to Customs territory. He emphasized that the NCS strictly adheres to laws and rules of engagement within the zone.

Highlighting the various stages involved in the clearance process, Chana assured that checks are in place to prevent any compromise by officers.

He debunked claims of illegal discounts or duty evasion, stating that all documentation is meticulously maintained to ensure transparency.

In line with the directive from the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Chana emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, including operators in import, export, and manufacturing chains within the Kano Free Trade Zone.

Chana concluded by reaffirming the command’s commitment to upholding the law and promoting legitimate trade activities within the Kano Free Trade Zone.
