Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, is set to host prominent human rights activists and stakeholders as the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Akwa Ibom State Branch, marks the 2026 United Nations International Day of Peace.
The event, scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2026, at the Bishop James Moynagh Pastoral Centre, Uyo, will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is themed “Invest in Peace.”
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of CDHR and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, SAN, is expected to lead other prominent human rights activists from across the country to the celebration.
According to the Chairman of CDHR, Akwa Ibom State Branch, Comrade Ndifreke Afangide, a major highlight of the event will be the signing of a peace accord by political parties as part of efforts to promote credible and violence-free elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The programme will also feature a panel discussion on “Faith and Governance,” to be led by Rev. Fr. Dominic Akpakpan, Director of the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), Uyo Diocese.
Other activities include the recognition of distinguished Akwa Ibom sons and daughters, as well as officers of security agencies who have contributed to the promotion of peace.
The former Military Administrator of Ogun and Rivers States, Group Captain Sam Ewang (Rtd.), is expected to deliver the keynote address, while the Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese will serve as Father of the Day. Prof. James Asuquo will chair the occasion.
The event is also expected to attract traditional rulers, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Commissioner of Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), civil society organisations and leaders of political parties.
The organisers said the celebration is aimed at promoting peace, justice and dialogue among stakeholders and encouraging collective efforts towards peaceful coexistence and a violence-free electoral process.
The CDHR has invited members of the public, human rights activists, the media and other lovers of peace and justice to participate in the celebration.
