DataPro, a Nigerian credit rating firm, has stated that the proposed African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) must establish investor confidence through analytical independence, methodological transparency, and consistent rating performance in order to achieve broad acceptance within Africa’s financial markets.
DataPro, in it’s August report, noted that AfCRA could play a pivotal role in expanding credit rating coverage across the continent and supporting the development of regional capital markets.
However, it emphasised that credibility in the credit rating industry is earned primarily through the quality and integrity of rating opinions, rather than institutional backing alone.
According to DataPro, confidence is fundamental to the effectiveness of credit ratings, as investors, lenders, and regulators depend on them to evaluate credit risk, determine borrowing costs, and guide capital allocation decisions.
The report further observed that analytical independence remains the cornerstone of trust for any credit rating institution, adding that ratings must be grounded exclusively in credit fundamentals and remain insulated from political, commercial, or other external influences.
It also underscored the importance of robust governance frameworks, including independent rating committees, transparent rating methodologies, and effective management of conflicts of interest.
DataPro added that AfCRA’s objective of incorporating a deeper understanding of African operating environments into its assessments could enhance credit analysis, provided it is applied in alignment with internationally recognised rating standards.
The rating firm noted that market participants are likely to evaluate AfCRA’s credibility over time based on the stability of its ratings, the timeliness of rating actions, and the correlation between assigned ratings and actual credit performance.
It maintained that a sustained track record of analytical consistency and predictive accuracy would ultimately define the agency’s reputation and level of market acceptance.
DataPro concluded that AfCRA’s long-term success would depend on its consistent demonstration of independence, transparency, analytical rigour, and strong governance, which it described as the core pillars of a credible credit rating institution.
