The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has hosted a delegation of outstanding students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) on an educational tour of its facility, reinforcing its commitment to developing the next generation of African engineers, innovators and industrial leaders.
The visit fulfilled a promise made by the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, during FUTO’s 37th Public Lecture, where he pledged to provide exceptional students with exposure to world-class industrial operations.
The delegation, led by FUTO Vice-Chancellor Professor Nnenna Oti, comprised top-performing students from engineering, technology and entrepreneurship disciplines.
Speaking during an interactive session, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, David Bird, described the refinery as a symbol of innovation, advanced technology and private sector investment capable of transforming economies and creating opportunities for young Africans.
Bird noted that the refinery, widely regarded as the world’s largest single-train refinery, represents one of the most technologically advanced industrial facilities on the continent.
According to him, the complex is among the world’s youngest, most modern and energy-efficient refineries, with a high level of automation and data integration.
He added that the facility is contributing to the decarbonisation of the oil and gas value chain while supplying cleaner fuels to Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
He said exposing students to large-scale industrial operations was important in changing perceptions about Africa’s industrial sector and encouraging young people to pursue careers in engineering and technology.
Bird also disclosed plans by the refinery to strengthen partnerships with universities and research institutions, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, biofuels and sustainable fuel technologies.
“Our objective is to stay closely aligned with universities, understand the research they are undertaking, and identify opportunities to support the commercialisation of innovative ideas,” he said.
Professor Oti described the visit as a life-changing experience that aligns with efforts to deepen collaboration between academia and industry.
She recalled that Dangote personally invited 30 students—15 female and 15 male—to visit the refinery and other industrial facilities in Lagos following his lecture at the university earlier this year.
According to her, the initiative provides students with a rare opportunity to connect classroom learning with practical industrial applications.
“This is what I describe as an Ivory Tower-Industry Partnership. There is no more effective way to bridge the gap between theory and practice than by exposing students to facilities of this scale,” she said.
The vice-chancellor noted that the visiting students were among FUTO’s best talents in mechanical, chemical, petroleum and software engineering, as well as entrepreneurship, adding that the experience would broaden their horizons and shape their future career aspirations.
For many of the students, the tour provided firsthand exposure to industrial technologies and systems previously encountered only in academic settings.
A 500-level Mechanical Engineering student, Amadi Ijeoma Winfrey, described the experience as enlightening, saying it helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application through direct exposure to equipment such as pumps, compressors and turbines.
Similarly, 500-level Chemical Engineering student Israel Ifanyichukwu said the visit offered valuable insight into how classroom concepts are applied on an industrial scale and would positively influence his academic and professional development.
Also speaking, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Professor Abraham Ngwuta, and Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Chikwendu Emenike Orji, commended Dangote’s entrepreneurial achievements, describing him as a model industrialist whose investments across key sectors demonstrate the role of vision, discipline and long-term planning in national development.
They said his business empire provides a practical example of how entrepreneurship can drive industrialisation, job creation and economic transformation.
The educational tour forms part of Dangote Industries’ broader efforts to support education, innovation and skills development while preparing young professionals to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s industrial growth and transformation.
