FirstBank, Visa Partner on New Naira Debit Card to Enhance Financial Inclusion

First Bank of Nigeria Limited, in partnership with Visa Inc., has launched a new Naira Visa Debit Card aimed at expanding access to electronic payments and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a cashless economy.

The bank said the card was designed to provide affordable and reliable payment solutions for millions of Nigerians, particularly everyday consumers who require a convenient payment option for domestic and international transactions.

According to the lender, the Naira Visa Debit Card will be accepted across Point of Sale (POS) terminals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), and online platforms connected to Visa’s global payments network. The product is expected to ease the transition from cash-based transactions to digital payments across retail purchases, utility payments, and e-commerce platforms.

Speaking on the launch, Chuma Ezirim, Group Executive, eBusiness and Retail Products at FirstBank, said the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to simplifying financial transactions for customers while promoting financial inclusion.

He stated: “Everyday transactions should be simple, secure, and rewarding. The Naira Visa Debit Card is designed to make life easier for our customers, whether they are paying for groceries, settling utility bills, or shopping online.”

Ezirim added that expanding access to reliable electronic payment channels would help more Nigerians adopt digital payments confidently, in line with the country’s cashless policy objectives.

Also commenting, Andrew Uaboi, Vice President and Cluster Head, West Africa, Visa, described the partnership as part of efforts to deepen Nigeria’s electronic payment ecosystem.

According to him, the card demonstrates the importance of providing payment solutions that cater to consumers across different income levels, while strengthening access to secure and convenient digital transactions.

The launch further expands FirstBank’s Visa card portfolio, which already includes credit cards and premium lifestyle spending cards. The bank said the addition completes its offerings across various customer categories.

The Naira Visa Debit Card is available to eligible FirstBank account holders through the bank’s branches nationwide.

Established in 1894, FirstBank is one of Africa’s leading financial institutions with operations across Africa, Europe, and Asia, while Visa operates a global digital payments network spanning more than 200 countries and territories.
