The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has honoured the pioneer female Deputy President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Funmi Fasan, in recognition of her contributions to labour activism and gender inclusion in the maritime sector.
The award, presented at a forum in Lagos recently, spotlighted Fasan’s historic emergence as the first woman to occupy the DPG position in the male-dominated union, with industry stakeholders describing the recognition as a milestone for women in maritime unionism.
Speaking at the ceremony, Fasan expressed optimism that women in the labour movement are well-positioned to emerge as branch presidents in the near future, provided they demonstrate commitment and active participation in union activities.
She urged women across the union’s branches to remain dedicated, stressing that consistent engagement through meetings, seminars, and workshops would enhance their visibility and leadership prospects.
“Women must take union activities seriously because their voices matter. With commitment, networking, and determination, they can attain the highest positions,” she said.
Fasan also acknowledged the leadership of MWUN President General, Francis Buna Abi, commending his support for gender inclusion within the union. She noted that despite MWUN’s male-dominated structure, gradual progress is being made in encouraging female participation.

Reflecting on her journey, the union leader described her rise as challenging but rewarding, adding that increasing numbers of women are now showing interest in unionism, partly inspired by her achievements.
She further called for structured mentorship programmes to nurture aspiring female union leaders, assuring that MWUN remains committed to capacity building for interested members.
Fasan, who has spent over three decades in union activities, also commended AMJON for what she described as a transparent and non-commercialised award process.
In his remarks, MWUN President General, Abi, praised AMJON for recognising Fasan’s contributions, describing the honour as one that belongs to the entire union.
He said the award would remain significant in MWUN’s history as it celebrates the first female DPG, noting that Fasan’s dedication, integrity, and professionalism make her deserving of the recognition.
Earlier, AMJON Vice President, Raymond Tedunjaye, said the selection process followed thorough scrutiny, emphasising the association’s commitment to professionalism and advocacy within the maritime industry.
Tedunjaye added that AMJON would continue to promote excellence and raise awareness in the sector through credible recognitions and responsible journalism.

The event underscores growing calls for gender inclusion in Nigeria’s maritime and labour sectors, with stakeholders expressing hope that more women will rise to leadership positions in the coming years.
