NRS Assumes Control of Mineral Royalty Collection Under New Tax Laws

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has assumed responsibility for the collection of mineral royalties from mining operators nationwide, following the implementation of new tax laws.

This development was announced after a meeting between the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and the Chairman of NRS, Zacch Adedeji, held recently in Abuja.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between both institutions and clarifying their respective roles under the new framework.

Under the arrangement, NRS will handle the administration and collection of mineral royalties, while the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will retain its technical and regulatory oversight of the sector.

A joint statement signed by both officials indicated that the transition, which took effect from January 1, 2026, is in line with the Nigeria Tax Laws 2025. The laws empower NRS to administer all federally collectable revenues and ensure proper accountability.

The statement noted that although NRS now oversees royalty collection, the ministry will continue to play a key supporting role by providing mineral pricing data, geological information, and industry coordination.

To ensure a smooth transition, both agencies have agreed to embark on a nationwide sensitisation programme aimed at educating mining operators on the new royalty filing and payment procedures.

In addition, plans are underway to introduce a modern digital system for end-to-end royalty administration, alongside regular joint technical sessions to address operational challenges.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the new framework in a transparent and efficient manner that supports the growth of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

Mining operators were urged to comply with their obligations under the new laws and participate actively in the planned sensitisation initiatives.
