The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has joined the global community in celebrating World Decent Work Day (WDW) 2025.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “For Democracy To Deliver Decent Work.”
Comrade Abi emphasized the importance of democracy in delivering decent work, stating that workers deserve better remuneration, social protection, and a conducive work environment.
He noted that millions of workers in Africa still lack access to living wages and social protection, which is essential for a dignified life.
The MWUN PG stressed that every nation should prioritize its economy on people over profit, ensuring that workers’ rights are respected and protected. He emphasized that a working democracy is essential for achieving this goal.
Comrade Abi appealed to government leaders across the continent to allow democracy to thrive, enabling workers’ conditions to improve.
He called on democracies globally to give democracy a chance to build a future where decent work is a reality for all workers.
The MWUN PG emphasized that World Decent Work Day is not just a celebration but a call to action.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to build a future where decent work is a reality, not a mere dream, through a working democracy in action.
