The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to shut down FlowerMills Plc in Lagos over the company’s refusal to allow unionisation of its workers at the ports.
The union, led by Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, claims to have coexisted with the company for 22 years, but has been consistently denied access to unionise its workers despite falling under the union’s jurisdiction.
MWUN is protesting the alleged oppression and suppression of FlowerMills workers, who have been subjected to poor working conditions for years.
The union’s General Secretary, Comrade Abi, expressed disappointment that such practices continue in the modern era of workers’ globalisation and labor initiatives.
The union has vowed to unionise the workers, and if resisted by FlowerMills management, it will withdraw the services of all FlowerMills staff at the ports.
Comrade Abi cited a similar successful unionisation exercise in Warri, Delta State, and warned that Lagos would not be an exception to good labor practices.
The dispute highlights the ongoing struggles between workers and management in various industries, with MWUN determined to protect the rights of its members and ensure fair labor practices.
