The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has sounded a dire warning about the alarming rate of insecurity across Nigeria.
He expressed deep concern over the recent abductions of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger states, as well as the killing of a Catholic priest’s brother in Kaduna state.
These incidents, he noted, demonstrate the brazen audacity of those who seek to terrorize the nation.
The Archbishop lamented the predawn attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 schoolgirls were violently taken from their dormitory.
He also condemned the kidnapping of Father Bobbo Paschal from St. Stephen Catholic Church in Kushe Gudgu, Kaduna State, which resulted in the death of Gideon Markus, the brother of another local priest.
According to Archbishop Martins, the recent killing of Muhammad Uba, a General in the army, by terrorists and the gruesome attack on worshippers at a Church in Eruku, Kwara State, have further shown that more needs to be done to secure the lives and properties of citizens.
He questioned the effectiveness of the military’s efforts, given their apparent powerlessness in the face of incessant attacks.
The Archbishop urged the Tinubu-led administration to take decisive action to bring home those in the hands of terrorists and to identify and deal with terrorists and their sponsors.
He also called on the political class to unite and support security agencies in their efforts to defeat terrorism, warning that no stone should be left unturned in bringing culprits and sponsors to justice.
