A high-level delegation from Nigeria, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Olufemi Oloruntola, graced the 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica.
The delegation, which included the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Director of Maritime Safety and Security at the Ministry, Babatunde Bombata, aimed to bolster Nigeria’s presence in global maritime governance.
The visit was a significant step in Nigeria’s campaign for election into the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), leveraging the shared membership of the 167 ISA member states who are also members of the IMO.
The delegation engaged in high-level sideline discussions on key issues, including deep-sea mining regulations, environmental protection, and sustainable exploitation of marine resources.
The delegation’s discussions focused on several key areas, including deep-sea mining regulations, environmental protection and sustainable exploitation of marine resources, capacity building and knowledge transfer, and strategic economic planning for the Blue Economy sector.
