The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has issued a statement distancing itself from reports suggesting that it plans to reintroduce the $300 landing fee for helicopter operators in Nigeria.
This fee was initially suspended in May 2024 following interventions by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
According to NAMA, the issue of the helicopter landing fee has been put on hold since May 2024, pending consultations with critical stakeholders.
The agency emphasized that any reports suggesting the imminent reintroduction of the fee are baseless, unofficial, and not contemplation of the agency.
NAMA reassured helicopter operators and airspace users that it operates within the bounds of extant rules and regulations, and any decisions regarding the helicopter landing fee would be made in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The agency advised helicopter operators to continue their legitimate duties, as NAMA works towards ensuring the safety of air navigation in Nigeria.
However, in a conflicting report, Tayo John, Director of Air Traffic Services, NAMA, announced that the agency plans to recommence the collection of the $300 landing fee from helicopter operators. According to John, the fee collection would ease the financial burden on the agency.
The proposed reintroduction of the helicopter landing fee has been met with criticism from stakeholders, who argue that the fee would impose an unreasonable financial burden on helicopter operators.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has vehemently rejected the fee, insisting that it is commercially injurious to helicopter operators and the Nigerian economy.
The controversy surrounding the helicopter landing fee highlights the challenges faced by NAMA in balancing its financial needs with the concerns of stakeholders in the aviation industry.
As the agency navigates this complex issue, it is essential that it engages in transparent and consultative decision-making processes to ensure that the interests of all parties are taken into account.
