The Nigerian Communications Commission hosted its 2024 Annual Workshop for Judges on Legal and Regulatory Issues in the Communications Industry at the Sheraton Hotel Ikeja, Lagos.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of the judiciary’s role in accelerating digital transformation in Nigeria.
Dr. Maida highlighted the NCC’s mandate to establish and oversee a regulatory framework for the Nigerian communications industry, promoting efficient, reliable, affordable, and easily accessible communications services.
He stressed the need to protect telecommunication infrastructure, which has suffered disruptions due to vandalism, theft, and restricted access.
The recent Presidential Order designating all telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure marks a significant milestone.
This framework strengthens the ability to confront issues such as vandalism and illegal tampering, holding violators accountable.
Dr. Maida noted that the judiciary plays a vital role in shaping the legal frameworks governing the digital era.
Judicial officers must adapt to emerging technologies, ensuring the rule of law is effective and enforceable online.
The NCC aims to provide insights to support the judiciary in fulfilling its role within the democratic framework, especially regarding the evolving landscape of digital technologies and communication practices.
Dr. Maida’s vision focuses on fostering growth in the telecoms sector as a catalyst for broader economic development, enhancing industry resilience, and prioritizing consumer satisfaction by improving service quality and experience.
The five drivers that underpin his leadership at the Commission are people, collaboration, data-driven decision-making, compliance, and digitization.
The workshop serves as a platform for the NCC to share insights into the Critical National Information Infrastructure Presidential Order and its significance.
With the judiciary’s support, Nigeria can accelerate its digital transformation, driving economic growth and development.
