Human Rights Abuse: Court Fines Famous Anambra Clergy N10 Million in Favour of Polaris Bank Staff

By Barnabas Esiet.

Popular Anambra cleric, Onokogu Hezekiah (also known as Daddy Hezekiah), will pay N10 million to Polaris Bank manager, Hezekiah Duru, for violating his fundamental human rights.

A Federal High Court in Abuja handed down the judgement following a petition filed against the Polaris Bank manager by Hezekiah, the founder of Living Christ Mission.

In the petition, the cleric accused Duru of financial misappropriation and breach of trust, leading to the later’s arrest and detention by the police.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Okorowo ruled against Hezekiah and the Nigeria Police Force, on the grounds that the arrest and detention of Duru was a violation of his fundamental human rights.

The judge who also faulted the warrant order obtained from the Nasarawa State Magistrate Court, highlighted that his judgement became necessary as the allegation was already under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge awarded 10 Million Naira damages jointly and severally against Onukogu and the Nigerian police, the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police and the officer in Charge of the Special Investigation Unit of the IGP office.
