The Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON), and other key stakeholders came together on Tuesday to celebrate the outgoing Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), Oscar Onyema, for his significant contributions to the Nigerian capital market over the past 13 years.
Onyema, who served as the CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) for 10 years and as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group) for 3 years, concluded his tenure in 2023.
He was honored on the floor of NGX by NGX Group, Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS), Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON), Central Securities Clearing System Plc (CSCS), NG Clearing, and other organizations.
The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Lamido Yuguda, praised Onyema for his visionary leadership, which led NGX Group through significant milestones and successful demutualization, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s financial landscape.
Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, the Group Chairman of NGX Group, congratulated Onyema on the completion of his remarkable leadership term and highlighted his achievements in modernizing the Exchange.
He commended Onyema for launching the Exchange trading platform, X-GEN, implementing a robust Business Continuity Plan during the Covid-19 pandemic, and enhancing regulatory standards to restore investor confidence.
Under Onyema’s leadership, NGX Group experienced a turnaround, with a Return on Equity of 13.8% in the 2023 fiscal year and payment of N1.5 billion in dividends to shareholders. Kwairanga expressed gratitude to Onyema for his pioneering vision and transformative accomplishments in the Nigerian capital market.
Temi Poopola, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NGX Group, praised Onyema’s leadership style and ability to navigate diverse perspectives with respect. He acknowledged Onyema’s sacrifices and commitment to the organization.
Dr. Oba Otudeko, former President of NSE, commended Onyema’s professionalism and confidence in delivering results. Sam Onukwue, Chairman of ASHON, highlighted the technological advancements and transformational initiatives introduced during Onyema’s tenure, including the successful demutualization of the Exchange.
The stakeholders expressed their gratitude to Onyema for his outstanding contributions to the Nigerian capital market and wished him success in his future endeavors.
