Zenith Bank Plc has officially appointed Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, effective June 1, 2024, pending approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Dr. Umeoji succeeds Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, who has had a successful five-year tenure that will conclude on May 31, 2024.
She is the first female to hold the position of GMD/CEO in the history of the bank, aligning with Zenith Bank’s tradition of promoting internal talent and grooming future leaders.
Having served as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank since October 28, 2016, Dr. Umeoji brings nearly thirty years of banking experience to her new role, with twenty-six of those years spent at Zenith Bank.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Jos, as well as degrees in Accounting and Law from Baze University, Abuja.
Additionally, she has obtained advanced degrees from prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, and the University of Salford.

Dr. Umeoji’s commitment to professional development is evident through her participation in various management programs at renowned universities worldwide, including MIT Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School.
She is a fellow of several professional bodies and has been recognized for her contributions to nation-building and humanitarian efforts.
Through her NGOs, Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and the Adorable Foundation, Dr. Umeoji has made a significant impact on society by supporting cancer patients and promoting education for underprivileged children, particularly girls.
Her dedication to ethical banking practices led her to establish the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria (CBAN) to uphold standards of integrity and service.
As a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger from the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Humanitarian Service Icon Award from the Sun Newspaper, Dr. Umeoji continues to inspire others through her philanthropic endeavors and commitment to excellence in the banking industry.
