Customs FOU Zone A Gets New Boss, Aliyu Retires After ₦13bn Seizures

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A), Ikeja-Lagos, has a new Acting Comptroller, with Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Olukayode Afeni taking over leadership after Comptroller Gambo Aliyu retired.

Afeni became the 30th Acting Comptroller of the unit on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at a handing-over ceremony attended by senior Customs officers, stakeholders and well-wishers.

The new Acting Comptroller pledged intelligence-led enforcement, improved revenue recovery and stronger collaboration with other security agencies to tackle smuggling and trans-border crimes.

Afeni said his administration would ensure firm and lawful enforcement while facilitating legitimate trade and protecting the interests of traders, manufacturers, importers, exporters and customs brokers.

He also promised to prioritise officers’ welfare, professional development and discipline.

Aliyu’s Scorecard

In his valedictory address, Aliyu disclosed that FOU Zone ‘A’ intercepted 779 smuggling attempts, with seizures including more than 20,900 bags of foreign rice, 61 vehicles, 12,606 parcels of cannabis weighing 6,194.3kg, 2.30kg of cocaine, 76,505 litres of PMS and 22 elephant tusks weighing 130.84kg.

The seizures, he said, had a combined duty-paid value of ₦13.075 billion.

Aliyu also disclosed that the unit recovered ₦3.19 billion between December 10, 2025 and September 24, 2026, representing 798 per cent of its ₦400 million annual revenue recovery target.

The figure was also a 776 per cent increase over the ₦411.45 million recovered during the corresponding period in 2025.

He attributed the performance to enhanced risk profiling, stricter compliance checks, targeted examination of suspicious declarations and collaboration with sister agencies and stakeholders.

Aliyu congratulated Afeni and urged him to lead with fairness, firmness, courage and sound judgment, assuring him of a strong operational foundation.
