#ENDSARS: New Movement For Human Rights And Good Governance – CDHR

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), the foremost Human Rights Organization in Nigeria, joined other Nigerians on Wednesday 20th October, 2021 to commemorate the anniversary of the alleged unjustifiable shooting and murder of innocent peaceful protestors by security agents of the Nigerian State.

In a statement, the Human Rights group described the #ENDSARS Campaign that started in October, 2020 as a new Movement driven by the youths for the promotion of Human Rights and the demand for good governance in Nigeria.

“What started as a protest against Police brutality, torture, extortion, extrajudicial murders, etc has become a consolidated Movement by the Nigerian youths. It has become a symbolic representation of the voice of the people and the energy and resilience of Nigerian youths in determining the pattern of affairs in this country, including the capacity to determine electoral process and outcomes. CDHR asserted.

The group which reiterated that citizens have a guaranteed right to express their opinions through legitimate means, including peaceful protests, advised the police and other security agencies to resist the temptation of preventing free citizens from associating, assembling and expressing their opinions about bad governance as well as their condemnation of brutality, torture, extortion, unlawful arrests and detention and extrajudicial murder.

“CDHR encourages Nigerian youths to uphold their freedom and continue to demand for their rights; citizens must continue to demand for good governance, transparency and accountability by public officials.
