Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), has been named Top10 Magazine’s Man of the Year 2026 in recognition of his leadership in Nigeria’s capital market, commitment to corporate governance and contributions to economic development.
Kwairanga emerged from a multi-stage selection and screening process involving several distinguished personalities, according to a statement by the magazine.
He succeeds Alhaji Nasiru Haladu Danu, Chairman of Casiva Ltd, who received the award in 2025.
The award, instituted more than a decade ago, recognises Nigerians whose leadership, integrity, influence and contributions to national development have distinguished them in their respective fields.
Past recipients include the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director of Access Bank, who won the inaugural award in 2016; Umar Abdullahi, Chairman of Cosgrove Group, in 2020; Chief Samuel Onyishi, Chairman of Peace Mass Transit and Founder of Maduka University, in 2022; Muhammad Nami, former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, in 2023; and Senator George Akume in 2024.
In its letter conveying the award, the magazine’s Board of Editors said Kwairanga’s selection reflected his leadership in the capital market, role in driving economic development, and advocacy for transparency, integrity and sound corporate governance.
The board described his contributions as significant to Nigeria’s economic development in 2026, noting that his leadership had strengthened his standing as a figure worthy of national recognition.
According to the magazine, Kwairanga has played a key role in efforts to strengthen investor confidence, improve corporate governance and position Nigeria’s capital market to attract investment and support business growth.
It also highlighted his advocacy for board accountability, shareholder protection, environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance, and the adoption of international best practices.
The publication said his influence extends beyond the capital market, citing his engagement with regulators, government and private-sector stakeholders on issues affecting Nigeria’s economic development.
Kwairanga has more than 25 years of experience spanning banking, pensions, investment, manufacturing and commerce.
He previously served as a council member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and is currently a council member of the Institute of Directors Nigeria. He has also served on the boards of several listed and unlisted companies, including Ashaka Cement Plc, where he spent more than a decade as a director and later chairman of the board.
He is currently the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Finmal Finance Services Limited, alongside his role as chairman of NGX Group.
Kwairanga is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, the Certified Pension Institute of Nigeria and the Institute of Directors Nigeria. He also chairs the Commerce, Trade and Investment Subcommittee of the Gombe State Transition Committee.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1991 and a Master of Business Administration in 1995 from the University of Maiduguri. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Governance from Liverpool John Moores University, obtained in 2007.
The publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Top10 Magazine, Tony Iji, said the award would be presented to Kwairanga at the magazine’s Annual Excellence Awards Night scheduled for November 22, 2026.
The event is expected to attract prominent personalities from government, business, finance and other sectors.
Iji said the magazine was also preparing a special edition to celebrate Kwairanga and other award recipients. The publication will document his leadership journey, achievements and contributions to Nigeria’s capital market and broader economy.
