The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria LNG Limited, Adeleye Falade, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening domestic gas supply and accelerating its energy transition agenda, saying ongoing investments are aimed at unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential while positioning the country to benefit from shifting global energy dynamics.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session with journalists, Falade disclosed that NLNG already has an active domestic LNG project and is engaging its Board on expanding the initiative offshore to meet growing local demand.
According to him, the project remains a priority despite the long development timelines typically associated with large-scale energy investments.
“We already have a project around domestic LNG. It is very much active and there are people working on it. Like many projects of this nature, it takes years, but we have certainly not abandoned it,” he said.
Falade noted that the company is also exploring ways to fast-track infrastructure development in response to Nigeria’s rising domestic energy demand.
Addressing concerns over possible regulatory bottlenecks, the NLNG boss said the company had not encountered any policy roadblocks but stressed the need for continued advocacy on reforms capable of unlocking Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
He explained that sustained engagement with policymakers remained essential to ensure the country maintains focus on critical economic and energy reforms.
On environmental sustainability, Falade highlighted the company’s conservation initiatives, particularly the Finima Nature Park, describing it as one of NLNG’s flagship carbon sink projects.
He said the park continues to expand and is being considered for designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, underscoring the company’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.
Falade added that NLNG continues to plant trees annually as part of its carbon reduction strategy while deploying advanced technologies to monitor greenhouse gas emissions.
According to him, the company has achieved the gold standard in emissions reporting by identifying and quantifying all major emission sources across its operations.
He said NLNG also uses forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras to detect fugitive methane emissions that conventional monitoring systems may fail to identify, enabling prompt intervention and improved operational efficiency.
The managing director further disclosed that the company is working with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission to identify suitable locations for carbon capture and storage as part of its long-term decarbonisation strategy.
Falade said growing global demand for lower-carbon energy products makes emissions reduction both an environmental and commercial imperative, noting that producers with higher carbon intensity increasingly face market disadvantages.
He reaffirmed NLNG’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, expressing confidence that the company remains on track to meet its climate targets while supporting Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.
