Zenith Bank Marks World Environment Day with Environmental Clean-Up Initiatives in Lagos

Zenith Bank Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices through a series of clean-up exercises held in Lagos to commemorate the 2026 World Environment Day.

The activities, carried out under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” were executed in two phases and aimed at promoting environmental protection, climate action, and community engagement.

The first phase took place on June 3, 2026, when employees of Zenith Bank Plc conducted a clean-up exercise along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The exercise involved the removal of waste materials, public sensitisation on proper waste disposal, and efforts to encourage environmental responsibility among residents and businesses in the area.

The second phase was held on June 4, 2026, at the Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi, Lagos, where the bank partnered with Lagos Waste Management Authority and Lagos State Waterways Authority to undertake a waterways clean-up operation.

The initiative focused on removing marine debris from the waterways, improving environmental health, and supporting Lagos State’s climate resilience objectives.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji said sustainability remains central to the bank’s operations and corporate philosophy.

According to her, the clean-up exercises underscore the collective responsibility of individuals and organisations to protect the environment. She noted that Zenith Bank remains committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to preserve communities, support climate action, and encourage greater environmental awareness.

Umeoji further stated that the bank will continue to align its operations with global environmental standards while contributing to the development of a more sustainable future for Nigeria and the African continent.

The bank said it remains focused on integrating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles across its operations through investments in green initiatives, energy efficiency projects, and community-based programmes.

Zenith Bank added that its sustainability agenda supports key targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), across its operations in Nigeria and other markets in Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe.
