Maritime Industry Experts Gather to Discuss Nigeria’s Maritime Future

The 8th Anniversary of the New Experience Newspaper brought together maritime industry experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Dr. Oluwasegun Musa, Chairman and Chief Consultant of Global Transport Policy, set the tone for the discussion, highlighting the industry’s potential and the need for strategic planning to unlock its full potential.

Musa noted that Nigeria’s maritime industry has enormous potential, with a coastline of 853km and over 10,000km of inland waterways.

The country’s strategic location on the Gulf of Benin and its natural resources make it an attractive hub for maritime trade.

In 2023, Nigeria’s merchandise trade was valued at $104.61 billion, with a carrying capacity of 5,907 thousand Deadweight Tonnage (DWT).

Despite its potential, Nigeria’s maritime industry faces numerous challenges, including infrastructure deficits, security concerns, outdated regulations, and environmental issues.

Musa emphasized the need for investment in modern port infrastructure, robust security measures, and regulatory reforms to facilitate the growth and development of the industry.

Musa highlighted opportunities for growth and development in Nigeria’s maritime industry, including trade expansion, investment in infrastructure, security enhancements, and regulatory reforms.

He emphasized the need for strategic planning and collaboration among stakeholders to unlock the industry’s full potential.

The discussion provided a platform for industry experts to share insights and ideas on how to reposition Nigeria’s maritime industry for growth and development.
