Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Felicitates Maritimers Globally on International Maritime Day

By Barnabas Esiet.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has felicitated maritimers globally on the occasion of International Maritime Day (IMD), celebrated annually on September 25.

This year’s IMD theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” emphasizes the crucial roles of the ocean in the global economy and climate, and the potential for sustainable practices to benefit humanity.

The MWUN President General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, led a delegation on a tour of some littoral states in Nigeria, including Warri and Port Harcourt, to celebrate the event with Nigerian maritimers and stakeholders in the industry.

During the tour, Comrade Abi emphasized the importance of safety and security rules, the ISPS code, and the need for maritimers to protect the ocean from pollution.

Comrade Abi noted that pollution in the ocean can destroy seafood, make international sea trade less attractive, and be detrimental to the Blue Economy institution.

He also emphasized the need for proper enforcement of climate change regulations to protect the global environment from hazardous emissions.

The MWUN President General called on maritimers to take responsibility for protecting the ocean, which is their heritage, pride, and joy.

He emphasized that the ocean belongs to everyone, regardless of color, tribe, descent, or nationality, and that it is their obligation to protect it.

Comrade Abi used the IMD occasion to appreciate stakeholders in the maritime sector, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Executive Director of Shippers Council (NSC), Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and the Executive Director of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), among others, for their support to the Maritime Workers Union.

The MWUN’s celebration of International Maritime Day highlights the importance of the ocean and the need for sustainable practices to protect it.

The union’s call to action emphasizes the responsibility of maritimers to protect the ocean and promote sustainable practices in the industry.
