Nigeria Customs Intercepts Container with Over 10,000 Donkey Genitals

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant seizure of a container loaded with over 10,300 donkey genitals along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway.

The interception was made on June 5, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m. following credible intelligence and coordinated surveillance by operatives of the Special Wildlife Office (SWO) and the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU).

This seizure is part of a larger effort by the NCS to combat wildlife trafficking. In the past 12 months, the SWO has uncovered and disrupted numerous illicit wildlife trafficking operations nationwide.

Some notable seizures include: 6087.9 kg of pangolin scales, 157 live African grey parrots, 20 green parrots, four live Senegal parrots, two budgies, six live monkeys, and four live pangolins rescued

Other seizures are 3022 donkey skins, 37 taxidermies, 16 zebra skins, 213 parrot heads, six eagle heads, and 128 hornbill heads.

The Comptroller-General of NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized that the illegal wildlife trade is not just an ecological issue but also tied to organized crimes, including money laundering, arms smuggling, and illicit currency flows.

To combat this menace, the Service is investing in digital surveillance, cross-border enforcement, and species identification.

The NCS acknowledges the role of strategic partners, including Focused Conservation, Wildlife Conservation Society, Wild Power Trust, Green Fingers, and Padrilas, as well as enforcement agencies in neighboring countries, in supporting its efforts to combat wildlife trafficking.
