The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) is set to host its 17th Media Lecture on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 5:00 pm WAT via Zoom.
This year’s lecture will focus on the theme “Surveillance, Safety and the Silencing of Truth,” examining the growing threats faced by journalists globally.
The event will feature a keynote address by Angela Quintal, Regional Director for Africa at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), alongside esteemed panelists:
Quinn McKew – Executive Director of ARTICLE 19, Fisayo Soyombo – Founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and Sonja Smith – Associated Press Correspondent.
The session will be moderated by Jimeh Saleh, former editor of the BBC/MacArthur Foundation Series.
The lecture aims to shed light on how sophisticated surveillance technologies, institutionalized harassment, and shrinking press freedoms are undermining journalist safety and the public’s right to know.
These threats have become increasingly prevalent, shaping the way media is practiced in many countries and deserving more attention in global conversations about democracy and civic space.
The Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series, held annually since 2009, commemorates the birthday of Professor Wole Soyinka, Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature and grand patron of the Centre.
Through its lectures and interventions, WSCIJ has consistently played a vital role in strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
