In a grand ceremony at the Mansion House in London on April 7, 2025, Nigerian business leader Jim Ovia, Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, was bestowed with the prestigious Freedom of the City of London award.
This esteemed recognition is a testament to Ovia’s remarkable contributions to global finance, economic development, and philanthropy.
Ovia’s dedication to innovation, excellence, and entrepreneurship has earned him a place among distinguished recipients, including Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, and Sir Winston Churchill.
In his acceptance speech, Ovia expressed gratitude, acknowledging the tireless efforts of the Zenith team in establishing the institution as a leading force in global finance.
He also praised the resilience and determination of the Nigerian and African people, who continue to inspire him.
President Bola Tinubu, in a statement by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, commended Ovia for his exceptional contributions to business, innovation, and technology, as well as his role in shaping Nigeria’s financial landscape and strengthening economic ties between Africa and the rest of the world.
Tinubu described the honor as a fitting recognition of Ovia’s unwavering commitment to excellence and visionary leadership.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State, Governor Sherrif Oborevwori of Delta State, Governor Dr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, and Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite.
This recognition is the latest in a series of prestigious awards received by Ovia for his outstanding contributions to banking, education, and philanthropy.
Ovia has received the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award, was named Banker of the Year and Titan of the Year by ThisDay Newspaper, and received the African Business Leader Award from the Africa-America Institute.
He has also been recognized by Forbes Africa as one of the most influential figures in banking and received honorary degrees from the University of Lagos and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
