In a significant move to ensure the well-being of its young citizens, the Oyo State government has flagged off a health insurance scheme for 10,000 primary school pupils.
The program, launched on Thursday at the Ibadan Civic Center, aims to provide access to affordable, quality healthcare for public primary school children in the state.
Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal presented insurance scheme ID cards to pupils from 90 schools across 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
He emphasized that the scheme is part of the state government’s effort to ensure its pupils are of sound minds and learn in conducive environments.
The program is a collaborative effort between the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).
The Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Celine Lafoucriere, praised the initiative, stating that it reinforces the collective commitment to universal health coverage and ensures that no child faces financial obstacles to accessing healthcare.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, and the Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, also commended the initiative, pledging their commitment to the scheme’s success.
The program will provide quality healthcare to beneficiaries without exorbitant costs. An additional 5,500 pupils will be enrolled in the scheme from next week, with plans to cover all 33 LGAs in Oyo State.
