By Newsshelve Correspondent.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in its operations by inaugurating an Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).

The unit, comprising 12 members, was constituted by the FIRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji, with the mandate to ensure zero tolerance for unethical acts and corruption within the revenue-collecting agency.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Revenue House in Abuja, was attended by representatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), who commended the FIRS for taking proactive measures to entrench transparency and accountability in its operations.

In his remarks, Adedeji emphasized the importance of integrity and transparency in the work of the ACTU, urging members to live above board and reflect the core values of the agency.

He charged them to bring integrity and transparency to bear in their roles and responsibilities, ensuring that the FIRS maintains a reputation for honesty and accountability.

The ICPC chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, represented by the Director, System Study and Review of ICPC, Olusegun Adigun, pledged support for the ACTU, stating that the unit has been empowered to deliver on its mandate.

He outlined the key responsibilities of the ACTU, including periodic sensitization of staff on the ills of corruption, examination of systems and processes prone to corruption, and monitoring of budget implementation.

The Director of the anti-corruption unit, Sa’adatu Yero, praised Adedeji for his commitment to strengthening the ACTU, highlighting the unit’s critical responsibility in preventing corrupt practices within the Service.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective tackling of corruption and unethical risks.

The inauguration of the ACTU marks a significant milestone in the FIRS’s efforts to promote transparency and accountability in its operations.

With the support of the ICPC and other anti-graft agencies, the unit is well-positioned to deliver on its mandate and ensure that the FIRS maintains a reputation for integrity and transparency.
